Tutorial 3 - The Use of F-Statistics

This tutorial shows how to apply the F test.  It outlines restricted and unrestricted models and shows how to apply the F-test formula.  There are a number of applications for the F-test.  We can test a joint hypothesis involving more than one coefficient, we can test the overall significance of the regression model and we can test for structural breaks.
Like the t-test we must obtain critical values from an F-distribution table to complete an F-test.This tutorial shows how to obtain the F critical value from the F tables.  The blow tutorial shows how to obtain F-critical values from the F-distribution.  Note that there are a number of different tables for the F-distribution, with different tables for the 90, 95 and 99 percent significance levels.
